ABOUT

Emily Powell is a contemporary artist living in Brixham, Devon, with a studio on the edge of Dartmoor. She is a colourist and painter, often working on a large scale and she places great emphasis on connection and emotion. Colour, joy and freedom pour out of her work which ranges from evocative landscapes rooted in her hometown and the surrounding Devon coastline; surreal still lifes; powerful abstracts; grand florals; ethereal flying wildlife; and the journey of domestic life with her husband and young daughter.

Growing up in Liverpool, Powell went on to study at Norwich School Of Art for her formal training with a sabbatical at the Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (2008-2011). She has exhibited with the Royal Society of Art, collaborated with MoMA, National Galleries of Scotland and The British Museum, and was part of the 2020 BBC Documentary for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Show.

In 2021 Powell exhibited across the UK in mixed and solo shows. The following year saw the publication of her first book, Start Painting Now, and an invitation to paint the front entrance at Great Ormond Street Hospital For Children. In the summer of 2022 a solo show in St Ives, The Year Of The Tiger, led her to be hailed as ‘one of the most important emerging artists in the UK today’. In January-February 2023 Powell undertook a residency at Dartington Trust in Devon, culminating in a solo exhibition Utopia, everyone’s invited.

Emily hosted her first major solo show at The Portland Gallery in London in February 2024, Kaleidoscope Of Hope, alongside painting expeditions to the Arctic and the Isle of Tiree.
